An op-ed published today in the Philadelphia Inquirer highlights the importance of congressional action in the face of widespread food insecurity in Pennsylvania and around the country. Written by representatives from Public Citizens for Children and Youth, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger and Community Legal Services, the opinion piece highlights recent votes in the U.S. House of Representatives to cut essential federal nutrition programs and the looming threat of more cuts in the debt-ceiling deal.

New report shows record numbers of Americans living in poverty

A report released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau found that 46.2 million Americans (15.1% of the population) were living in poverty in 2010. This is the highest number ever recorded by the Bureau, illustrating the deep impact of the recession on American families. Children have higher rates of poverty than any other age group, and the poverty rate among children rose to 22% in 2010.

USDA finds that nearly 49 million Americans struggled to get enough food in 2010

In this report released yesterday, the United States Department of Agriculture found that 14.5% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity in 2010, approximately the same number as 2009. While food insecurity among households with children dropped slightly, households with children under the age of six are still most affected by food insecurity, with nearly one quarter (23.6%) of children living in households at risk for hunger.

New report shows extremely high rates of food hardship among households with children

According to a report released today by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), nearly half of all households with children living in Pennsylvania's First Congressional District reported not having enough money to buy food in 2008-2010.  Across the state, one in 5 households with children experienced such food hardship.

WIC cut would deprive thousands of Pennsylvania's babies of vital nutrition

WIC provides nutrition-rich foods, infant formula, and nutritional counseling for pregnant women, mothers, and children up to five years of age.  A cut to the program recently approved by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee would turn away between 200,000 and 350,000 program participants nationwide next year.  As many as 10,000 Pennsylvania recipients could be affected.

Philadelphia families continue to struggle with food hardship

Data released today by the Food Research and Action Council (FRAC) show that Pennsylvania's 1st congressional district remains one of the hungriest places in America.  The newest figure--that 31.2% of those in the first district experienced food hardship in 2009--is relatively unchanged from the previous year.  What this number does not show is the day-to-day reality for Philadelphia families who are working hard to raise healthy children.

Recession continues to scar children's potential: new USDA food insecurity data released

The United States Department of Agriculture released its annual report on food insecurity in the United States.  In households with very young children, the rate of food insecurity rose to 25.4% from 24.5% in 2008. This means that an additional 483,000 children under age 6 lived in food insecure households in 2009.

Food stamp budget threatened by Child Nutrition Reauthorization

The Obama administration is putting pressure on the House of Representatives to pass a bill this week that will take $2.2 billion from the SNAP (food stamp program) in order to pay for child nutrition programs. Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) told the New York Times “While I want a strong and robust reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, we cannot do it on the backs of the unemployed, underemployed and chronically poor.”

Hunger in the Classrooms Report

There was a nationwide survey of elementary and middle school examining childhood hunger in the classroom. The results are startling - 62 percent of teachers say they see children who regularly come to school hungry each week because they are not getting enough to eat at home.

Half of U.S. children will use food stamps

According to the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine half the children in the U.S. will be on food stamps during their childhood. The study was based on data collected over a 29 year period. Over 300,000 people are recieving food stamps in Philadelphia and almost half of them are children.

They discussed how everyday is a struggle and what they have to do just to get by to feed their kids.
