A report released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau found that 46.2 million Americans (15.1% of the population) were living in poverty in 2010. This is the highest number ever recorded by the Bureau, illustrating the deep impact of the recession on American families. Children have higher rates of poverty than any other age group, and the poverty rate among children rose to 22% in 2010. Read more

In this report released yesterday, the United States Department of Agriculture found that 14.5% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity in 2010, approximately the same number as 2009. While food insecurity among households with children dropped slightly, households with children under the age of six are still most affected by food insecurity, with nearly one quarter (23.6%) of children living in households at risk for hunger. The United States Department of Agriculture released its annual report on food insecurity in the United States. In households with very young children, the rate of food insecurity rose to 25.4% from 24.5% in 2008.
